Earlier, OPPO Find X astounded the digital circle with the “dual-track periscope structure”, and its special form also opened up new ideas for the industry. Now that another new technology of OPPO has been exposed, its ingenious approach has once again attracted attention from inside and outside the industry. On August 28, LetsGoDigital reported that OPPO applied for a patent for a retractable mobile phone screen, which can increase the display area of the mobile phone screen by 80% after the screen is stretched. From the picture example, the screen is not spliced but integrated.
It is said that OPPO submitted the patent to the State Intellectual Property Office on 2020 year 2 month 27 , and announced it to the outside world on 8 month 28 . The patent application document contains 28 sketches and brief descriptions, mainly showing the screen design of a retractable mobile phone. When the screen is in the “storage” state, the volume of the phone is greatly reduced, the tangent surface becomes a small square, and the phone screen extends a part of the display area upwards after being stretched. At present, OPPO official and other channels have not disclosed more information, but from the perspective of this patent, it is a more efficient “folding” solution. Compared with the current folding screen solutions on the market, the retractable mobile phone screen looks lighter.
It is worth mentioning that OPPO has not disclosed the development trend of its folding screen before. This time the patent of the retractable mobile phone screen was exposed, although it was unexpected, but it was not “accidental.” In fact, as of June 30, 2020, OPPO’s global patent applications have exceeded 49,000, and the number of global authorizations has exceeded 19,000. Among them, the number of invention patent applications exceeds 43,000, and invention patent applications account for 88% of all patent applications. In the domestic ( excluding Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan ) ranking of invention patents in the first half of 2020, OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. ranked second with 1925.
And behind these invention patents is OPPO’s continuous technological research and development. In 2019, OPPO invested 10 billion yuan in research and development, and OPPO will continue to invest 50 billion yuan in research and development budget within three years, focusing on cutting-edge technologies such as 5G/6G, artificial intelligence, AR, and big data. In short, the patent for the retractable mobile phone screen is by no means a “cudgel” achieved overnight, but the result of OPPO’s continuous R&D investment. As for when the patent will land and when it will be used in mobile terminals, it is still difficult to know, we might as well look forward to it.
